St Michaels Infant School Mickleham, Dorking

Physical Education

We believe that if we open our hearts and minds to the possibilities each and every one of us, no matter how small, can make a difference in our school and beyond.  The parable of the Mustard seed teaches us that God can do a lot with a little!  At St Michael’s school we passionately believe that every child will foster a love for being active.  Through our PE lessons and our active brain breaks, all of our children will learn and grow as active learners, improving in their abilities and recognising the impact of physical activity on their minds and bodies.

Meet Mr Stevenson

St Michael’s School’s Physical Education teacher

With over 7 years of invaluable experience in sports coaching, he has had the incredible opportunity to work with numerous schools and organisations, fostering a love for sports and instilling valuable skills in young athletes.

His passion for sport started at a young age and grew into a deep rooted commitment to coaching.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Science and Coaching, along with qualifications in a host of other sports including an FA Level 2 certificate.

He believe in a holistic approach to coaching.

While tactical and technical development play pivotal roles in achieving success in sport, he recognises the significance of developing key characteristics and personality traits that extend beyond the field.

He is committed to nurturing qualities such as teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship, as these traits contribute to both children’s growth as individuals and their success as athletes. With a blend of passion, care and high energy, his coaching philosophy centres around creating an environment where children feel motivated, inspired and supported. He strives to cultivate a positive and inclusive atmosphere, allowing each individual to flourish and reach their full potential. He understands that the journey of sport goes beyond the wins and losses; it is about personal growth, building relationships and embracing the joy of the game!

"Happy and healthy in body and mind"

Department of Education's Vision

For all pupils leaving primary school to be physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

How will the children learn and grow in PE?

We recognise the importance that physical education (PE) plays in the curriculum and here at St Michael’s we are committed to providing all children with opportunities to fully engage in all areas of physical learning.

We want to ensure children leave St Michael’s being confident, resilient and motivated to be active within school and the wider community and lead a healthy lifestyle.

We know PE develops participation in competitive sports and activities, supports our children in building self-confidence and self-esteem and allows them to build on positive habits for the future.

How do we make this happen?

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which incorporates a broad base of movement knowledge, teaching skills and collaborative, competitive situations.  We aim to cater for the preferences, strengths and needs of every child.  We will provide learning situations where children work independently, in pairs and groups.  Every child will be encouraged to appreciate the importance of having a healthy body and they will begin to understand the factors that affect health and well-being.

PE is delivered with a specialist sports coach and it is team taught alongside teachers and LSA’s within the school.  We also have many active learning breaks throughout the day (including Jump Start Jonny and Danny Go) and our sports coach comes in for extra sessions during the week to promote an active and healthy mindset for our children.

How do we know this has made a difference?

“I enjoy PE as I feel fit and healthy after” – Year 2 pupil

“I like PE because I run lots and I get out of breath” – Year 1 Pupil

“I enjoy the different things we do with Mr Stevenson” – Year 2 Pupil

St Michael's PE Pledge -
"Happy and healthy in body and mind"

This means that children have the opportunity to be active every single day.  By the end of the day, children at Newdigate will have been offered 5 opportunities to be active.
